A dynamic two day course for the beginner or intermediate paddler!

This two day course covers incredible amounts of knowledge and skills for sea kayakers who are both beginners and intermediate paddlers. No experience is necessary; however a background in map and compass and kayak rescue will be helpful. We recommend paddlers take the full day Flatwater Course before registering for this program. The goal of this course is to enhance personal skills for recreational and expedition paddlers.

In this course you will learn:

  • Boat and equipment theory
  • Standards and regulations
  • Kayak control and stroke efficiency
  • Paddling progressions for mastery of boat movement
  • Advanced self and partner rescues
  • Physics of winds, waves and currents
  • Nautical navigation
  • Reading clouds and weather systems
  • Basics of risk management and expedition planning


This course includes:

  • 2 full days of training (9 a.m.- 4 p.m.)
  • All necessary equipment
  • Professional instruction
  • Mastery of boat control
  • Rescues (self + partner)
  • Course manual

Cancellation Policy for Paddle Canada Certification Programs:


1000 Islands Kayaking will operate within the Paddle Canada Program guidelines and offer the Level 1 Kayak Skills Program with a 1 instructor to 6 participant ratio. Due to the logistics and planning for our certification programs, we are unable to provide a refund, if cancellation occurs within 15 days or less, of the intended program. If a replacement for the program is found or for cancellations of more than 15 days, a refund less a 25% administration fee, will be issued. 


Please understand that even if you have a sudden medical problem or family emergency, we will not be able to provide the 75% refund, without a replacement for the program, unless more than 15 days are given.


Our Certification Programs will operate rain or shine, with lots of water time and some classroom elements. 


If 1000 Islands Kayaking cancels a program due to weather or insufficient registration, we will offer to alter your dates, free of charge, or provide you with a full refund.

Please note: we DO NOT have parking specific to our facility. Please read the following, for your options. 


May-June, September-October:There is parking available along Main Street and Kate Street, free of charge. There is also a public parking lot on Kate Street. 


July-August: In addition to parking on Main Street, the Town of Gananoque offers a free shuttle service to alleviate some congestion at the waterfront.  Please allocate extra time before your trip, to park and shuttle to our area. The following is a link to the shuttle schedule and route. Please follow the Waterfront Express route. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to give us a call!


Thousand Islands Kayaking is located in Gananoque, Ontario.  It is centrally located in the heart of the 1000 Islands and serves a vast region including Brockville, Cornwall, Kingston, Belleville, Ottawa and surrounding areas. The 1000 Islands are one of the most beautiful regions for Kayaking in Ontario and Canada.
