Introduction to Kayaking

A full day of instruction for the beginner or intermediate paddler!

This full-day course provides excellent instruction for beginner and intermediate paddlers. Be prepared for day tripping with your friends and family. We explore the details of regulation equipment, boat designs and trip planning. Practicing paddling techniques and rescue scenarios in a calm and controlled environment is a great way to increase your boat control, use less energy and develop confidence for a safe day on the water.

This course is absolutely necessary if you plan on paddling by yourself, with children or are taking friends out who have never paddled before. Keep yourself safe and start with the right strokes.

This course is the same course as our one-day flatwater certification course. You may want to register with Paddle Canada if you are ever planning to work in the outdoor industry, lead social groups or progress to more advanced courses. Cancellation Policy for Paddle Canada Certification Programs


1000 Islands Kayaking will operate within the Paddle Canada Program guidelines and offer the Basic Kayak Skills Program with a 1 instructor to 6 participant ratio. Due to the logistics and planning for our certification programs, we are unable to provide a refund, if cancellation occurs within 15 days or less, of the intended program. If a replacement for the program is found or for cancellations of more than 15 days, a refund less a 25% administration fee, will be issued.

Please understand that even if you have a sudden medical problem or family emergency, we will not be able to provide the 75% refund, without a replacement for the program, unless more than 15 days are given.

Our certification programs will operate rain or shine, with lots of water time and some classroom elements.

If 1000 Islands Kayaking cancels a program due to weather or insufficient registration, we will offer to alter your dates, free of charge, or provide you with a full refund.

PLEASE NOTE: We DO NOT have parking specific to our facility. Parking is available along residential streets ( Main Street, John street, and South street) free of charge. A public parking lot ( overnight and day parking)can be found at 760 Stone Street free of charge. Please note this parking lot requires a taxi to get to our facility.  Parking can also be found at the Gananoque Municipal Marina for daily and overnight parking, there is a fee at this lot.
