Certification – Level 2 Skills

Advanced skills for the more experienced paddler!

The level 2 skills course focuses on developing the practical skills for overnight and expedition tripping. Well-developed and personal mastery of skills such as a strong forward stroke, effective bracing, maneuvering in waves and currents, advanced rescues including rolling and towing are taught and perfected.

Activities that show control and confidence may include: paddling through narrow rocky channels with small waves or current or traversing open water crossings in moderate winds and currents. At this level, the participant must also engage in judgement, planning and navigation tasks relevant to overnight trip planning and execution.

  • launching and landing in challenging conditions
  • advanced edging and bracing
  • navigation and route selection
  • theory of weather, winds, waves, tides and currents
  • communications, safety and risk management
  • how to plan and execute an overnight camping trip

This course includes…

  • all necessary equipment
  • five days of professional coaching and skill development
  • one night of camping on a Thousand Islands National Park Island
  • all tents + camping equipment
  • course manual

Our courses do NOT include immersion gear (dry-suits or wet-suits). If you are on a course in May, June or September please ensure you rent a dry-suit or wet-suit in advance.  No matter what the weather, immersion gear will greatly improve your comfort level.

Please also be aware we do not supply lunches on our course. Ensure to pack a high-energy lunch to get you through your day on the water.

Courses are completed over five days from 9am to 5pm and include overnight camping between day four and day five.

Please Note: A minimum of 4 participants is required to operate a certification course. Individuals are welcome to join an existing course.

Cancellation policy for Paddle Canada certification programs

1000 Islands Kayaking operates within the Paddle Canada program guidelines which limits the ratio of instructors to participants. Due to the logistics and planning for our certification programs, we are unable to provide a refund, if cancellation occurs within 15 days or less, of the intended program.

Kayaking adventures are enjoyed in sunshine and in rain. Please ensure that you bring rain gear and warm clothing for your comfort.  We do provide spray skirts to help keep you dry, and your booking will not be cancelled due to rainy weather.

Should it become necessary for 1000 Islands Kayaking to cancel for any reason we will offer to alter your date free of charge, or provide you with a full refund upon request.
